Supplemental Information

Foreign Language Department

The eighth grade foreign language staff makes recommendations for student placement within the high school foreign language program. Glastonbury High School graduation requirements are met by fulfilling a variety of performance standards. Currently, successful study of a foreign language fulfills GHS performance standards 10 and 11:

GHS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

10. The Glastonbury High School student communicates in at least one language other than English.

11. The Glastonbury High School student demonstrates an understanding of the interrelationship between the practices, products, and perspectives of the cultures studied.

Please consult GHS guidance counselors for further information regarding graduation requirements and college entrance recommendations.*

In Glastonbury, we are noted for our long sequence of language study. We encourage students who have begun languages in the elementary or middle grades to continue their language studies into the high school. This recommendation is based upon observations of student performance in class. The factors considered include:

Level 1 in 9th Grade courses
(Spanish, French or Russian 3 level 1)

•  enthusiasm for the language and cultures being studied
•  “A” academic average
•  “A” or higher homework average
•  “A” or higher classroom participation average
•  development of excellent class work and study habits

Spanish III (level 2 – 9 th Grade)

Additional course options available to entering 9th grade students are included below.

If parents elect to override the recommendation, they should be aware that:

•  the teacher is obligated to maintain the rigor and pace of the course.
•  the teacher will not be able to provide remedial tutorial to meet the prerequisites of the class.
•  if a course change is necessary, admission to another class is on a space available basis and grades are transferred to the next course.

* Generally colleges will only accept foreign language credits earned in grades 9-12 to meet requirements. We urge you to consult with guidance counselors and to refer to admissions offices for college entrance requirements. In addition, we would like to emphasize that although some colleges do not require a foreign language for entrance, many require the study of a language for graduation. Some colleges waive the graduation requirements if incoming students can demonstrate, through departmental or standardized tests, that they have achieved college level proficiency in foreign language. Please consult college catalogs for requirements.
