Brief Summary of Unit (including curricular context and unit goals):

Students will explore leisure time activities that are popular and are engaged in throughout the Americas . Students will use prior knowledge of clothing and weather. In addition, students will learn new vocabulary associated with the seasons and adjectives appropriate to the pastime activities. A major goal will be for the student to be able to present orally and in writing their favorite activity.

Number of days for activity: four weeks

Materials and resources (including technology and multimedia): song from Cantando We Learn: “Los Meses del Año”, teacher-made flashcards and work sheets, book Los Zoomies y los deportes (by Kiki Kaye, Laredo Publishing)

•  Students will explore the commonalities between the sports of today and those activities popular during the time of exploration.
•  The interrelationship that exists between season, sports and activities, weather and clothing.

•  SW be able to name the clothing and weather associated with each season.
•  SW be able to name some famous Hispanic athletes and the sports they play.

•  SW be able to use the verbs: jugar, gustar, usar, llevar as well as the following new vocabulary: estación, primavera, verano, otoño, invierno, el baloncesto, la lucha libre, el béisbol, el boxeo, el fútbol, el golf, el fútbol americano, montar en bicicleta, el hockey, montar a caballo, esquiar, saltar la cuerda, el esquí acuático, bailar, patinar, mirar la televisión, patinar en hielo, leer, nadar, la natación, el voleibol, el tenis, la gimnasia, correr, hablar con amigos, popular, excelente, fácil, difícil, aburrido/a, interesante, divertido/a, emocionante, adentro, afuera.
