Glastonbury Foreign Language Alumni CornerMy interest in Russian was greatly influenced by former GHS teacher Symond Yavener, who was my sophomore year instructor. He subsequently went to teach at Central Connecticut State University, where I took up the language again after nearly 10 years of neglect. The 3 semesters of Russian courses taken at Central served to refresh my knowledge and then expand on it. I traveled to the Soviet Union at the end of 1975, where I visited Leningrad and Moscow. A few years ago some friends from Ukraine came to the area, with whom I spoke Russian. This was especially good for keeping up with the language.
Currently, I am a technician for the Associated Press in Hartford . Although Russian is not used at all for work as such, we have had visitors from Ukraine whom I was able to greet. One never knows when a second language can be useful. Although I do not use Russian for my job, I would certainly recommend foreign language study, no matter what the language, as it does enrich one's life considerably.
