My ability to speak French made it possible for me to join the Peace Corps in Benin, where I used it on a daily basis. This ability, gained through the Glastonbury school system, opened up an opportunity which became one of the best experiences of my life. However, there were certainly times when it was a struggle, and I would attribute almost all of the difficulty I encountered to problems of communication, be it cultural or linguistic. Although I studied French from 6-10 th grade, I felt my transition to life in Africa would have been easier had I continued studying French through my junior and senior year, as well as through college. I am now very grateful that I have the ability to speak French fluently, but I regret that I did not take better advantage of the resources and learning experiences that were available to me as a student. My fluency in French will likely facilitate my job search for a position in the field of political risk analysis.
