Advocacy:
Early Language Learning

Glastonbury is a unique school district in that it is one of the few that offers a long sequence of articulated language study starting at the early elementary level. Our students begin to learn a foreign language at a very young age: first graders begin with Spanish, and in sixth grade they can switch to French. In seventh grade, students have the option of adding Russian to their coursework. At the high school, many students pick up Latin in addition to the language(s) they already study. Mandarin Chinese was added to the high school curriculum in 2005 and Ancient Greek will be added in 2006. Children at the East Hartford/Glastonbury Elementary Magnet School learn Japanese in grades K-5.

In our increasingly interconnected world, few dispute the utility of knowing a second language for personal or professional reasons, but why start learning it early?

Anyone who spends time with very young children might notice how quickly children "catch on" to things. Let an inappropriate word slip, and your three-year-old will repeat it ad nauseam. Cognitive studies have shown that young children acquire language rapidly in a way that they never will once they get older. In fact, they can pick up the structures and phonetics of multiple languages, given enough exposure. And if students are allowed continued exposure to a second language throughout a long, well-articulated sequence of study, they can attain levels of proficiency that others who start learning languages later in life simply can't.
